Coin Legislation April 2009 Summary

During April 2009, there were six bills introduced related to coins. This included three for commemorative coin issues and one bill seeking to authorize production of palladium coins. There were also two corollary bills introduced. These bills have similar measures already introduced in the Senate or House of Representatives.

On April 1, 2009, S.758 was introduced to propose Saint Gaudens Double Eagle Palladium numismatic and bullion coins. Last year, a set of similar bill had been introduced, but never became law.

On April 21, 2009, H.R. 2001 was introduced to propose Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefields commemorative coins. This joins a separate bill which seeks commemorative coins for the War of 1812 as the setting for the writing of the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key.

On April 23, 2009, H.R. 2097 was introduced as a corollary bill to S. 653 which seeks commemorative coins for the Star Spangled Banner. The Senate bill S. 883 was introduced on the same date. This bill is a corollary bill to H.R. 1209 which seeks Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins.

Late in the month two new proposals were put forth. The first was H.R. 2123 introduced on April 27, which seeks to authorize Gettysburg Commemorative coins. The coins would emblematic of the 1863 invasion of Pennsylvania, the Gettysburg Campaign, and the Gettysburg Address. The second new bill was S. 945 which seeks Robert La Follete Sr. Commemorative coins. If approved, the silver dollars would be issued in 2011.
