Coin Legislation May 2009 Summary
The month of May was a relatively quiet one on the coin legislation front. There was one new bill introduced to propose a commemorative silver dollar coin for Mother’s Day, one bill progressed further on the path to becoming law, and two corollary bills were introduced.
On May 7, 2009, S 1012 was introduced to propose a Mother’s Day Commemorative Silver Dollar. Similar bills to commemorate the “second Sunday in May” had been introduced last year. Although the bills had seen some support they never became law. The current bill seeks up to 400,000 silver dollars to be produced in 2014.
Also on May 7, 2009, HR 2318 was introduced seeking Robert M. La Follette Sr Commemorative Coins. This is a corollary bill to S. 945 previously introduced in the Senate.
On May 14, 2009, the bill HR 1209 seeking Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins passed in the House of Representatives. The bill seeks $5 gold and $1 silver coins to be issued in 2011 and has many supporters. To become law, the bill must pass the Congress and then be signed into law by the President.
Also on May 14, HR 2421 was introduced in the House. This is a corollary bill to S. 1012, which seeks Mother’s Day Commemorative coins.
