National Future Farmers Commemorative Coins Proposed

National Future FarmersThe latest coin related legislation was introduced on July 31, 2009. It seeks to create commemorative coins to mark the 85th anniversary of the National Future Farmers of America Organization. In addition to the House Bill, an identical bill was introduced in the Senate as S. 1553 on the same day.

The bill would require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint and issue up to 100,000 gold coins and 500,000 silver coins in 2012. The gold coins would have a weight of 8.359 grams, diameter of .85 inches, and composition of 90% gold. The gold coins would have a weight of 26.7 grams, diameter of 1.5 inches, and composition of 90% silver.

The bill provides little in the way of design requirements, stating only that the designs shall be emblematic of the 85 year history of the National Future Farmers of America Organization. Required inscriptions include “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “United States of America”, and “E Pluribus Unum”.

The bill proposes the production of up to 50,000 commemorative gold coins and up to 300,000 commemorative silver coins to be issued in the year 2013. The gold coins would have a composition of 90% gold, 10% alloy, have a weight of 8.359 grams, and diameter of .85 inches. The silver coins would contain 90% silver, 10% copper, have a weight of 26.73 grams, and diameter of 1.5 inches.

Surcharges of $25 per gold coin and $10 per silver coin would be added to the sales price of each coin. The surcharges would be paid to the National Future Farmers of America Foundation to create an endowment.
