Similar bills had been introduced in 2004, 2005, and 2007, but were never voted on in the House or Senate, and never became law. There is currently a separate bill which seeks to produce commemorative coins emblematic of the Battle of Baltimore which took place during the War of 1812 and inspired the writing of the Star Spangled Banner.
The coins proposed under H.R. 2001 would include up to 300,000 $5 gold coins, up to 1,000,000 $1 silver coins, and up to 2,000,000 half dollar clad coins. The gold coins would have a weight of 8.359 grams and contain 90% gold. The silver coins would have a weight of 26.73 grams and contain 90% silver. The clad coins would be struck to the current specifications for half dollar coins.
The design of the coins would be emblematic of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Specified inscriptions would includethe value of the coin, the year of “2011″, and the words “Liberty”, “In God We Trust”, “United States of America”, and “E Pluribus Unum”. The final designs for each coin would be selected by the Secretary of the Treasury after consultation with the CFA and the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefields Foundation and review by the CCAC.
Surcharges in the amounts of $35, $10, and $3 for the gold, silver, and clad coins respectively would be added to the sales prices. These surcharges would be distributed to the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 Battlefields Foundation to be used for the preservation of historically significant battlefields.
